Common types

Some of the most common types of poetry:

  1. Sonnet: A 14-line poem with a specific rhyme scheme, traditionally used to express love or beauty.

  2. Haiku: A three-line poem with a 5-7-5 syllable count, often used to describe nature and the changing seasons.

  3. Lyric: A type of poetry that expresses the personal feelings or thoughts of the speaker.

  4. Epic: A long narrative poem that tells the story of a hero or heroic event.

  5. Free verse: A type of poetry that does not have a set rhyme or meter, and often has a more natural and conversational flow.

  6. Blank verse: A type of poetry that does not rhyme, but has a set meter.

  7. Limerick: A humorous five-line poem with a specific rhyme scheme and meter.

  8. Villanelle: A 19-line poem with a specific rhyme scheme and pattern of repetition.
